How Did the Idea for This Game Come About?

The idea for this game came from a desire to remake my previous game in a better way.

My previous game on Steam, Missing Features: 2D, originated from a game jam I participated in, Ludum Dare 45, with the theme "Starts with nothing." The idea I had was to make a game where you would unlock its systems, such as camera movement, the player's jump, sprites, animations, enemy behaviors, and so on. The game received good feedback regarding the theme, so I decided to make a full game to publish on Steam. My main goal was simply to understand what it took to publish a game on Steam and see how the store operates.

That's how Missing Features: 2D was born—a platformer where you unlock its systems. In practice, it's just a simple platform game. I already had the idea to make another game, Missing Features: 3D, following the same logic but as a 3D platformer.

Over the years, I started other projects with enthusiasm, but eventually gave up on them. Every game developer has been through that. Until I decided to start a new game and finish it this time (I hope!). I thought of simple ideas for what I could do, but nothing excited me. I also wasn't excited about doing Missing Features: 3D; I wanted to leave that game buried in the past.

Then, while talking with another developer who had much more experience than me, he suggested I should remake Missing Features. After discussing it with Maurício, who is doing the game's art, he also liked the idea. So that was it. Maurício had another game, and his idea was to merge his game with mine.

That's how Squareboy and the Missing Features was born.

The game is still in a very initial stage of development. I hope to be able to show more of the game soon!
